Soldierfish

Picture
Bright red and big-eyed, they’re common tropical reef fish.

They’re nocturnal, meaning they’re most active at night. During the day, they like to hide under a reef ledge or in a crevice.

They usually live in groups when they’re young and prefer to be alone as adults, although they generally aren’t territorial.

They can make a chattering noise by grinding the teeth in their throat and stretching muscles against their long gas bladder.

They’re in the same family as squirrelfish.

They usually grow from six to 14 inches long.
